Selecting Your Swimming Pool Size & Shape
Selecting Your Swimming Pool Size & Shape
Pool designs have evolved significantly over the years and there is now a large range of shapes and sizes to choose from. The old kidney shapes from the past are still around (and due to make a comeback one day!), but there is now also a huge selection of modern, geometric styles that suit today’s contemporary architecture. Sizes have also adapted, with more small pools being available to meet the needs of compact outdoor spaces. With so many designs to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you and your family. Here are our tips to selecting the right size and style of pool to suit your backyard.
How much room do you have?
Measure your outdoor space and think about how best to use the area to maximise the size of pool you can install. Keep in mind any underground obstacles that may restrict the positioning. We can help you check for these if you’re not sure. As a general rule, your pool should be at least the deep end of the pool away from any boundaries, although there can be some exceptions to this. If you have a smaller area to work with, consider placing your pool along a back wall, which allows you to utilise an existing fence (check it meets pool fencing regulations).
Remember to leave room for lounging or entertaining. This might mean you may need to consider a smaller pool, but it will make your entire area more usable. Also consider the terrain of your backyard – is it flat or on a slope? This can affect your selection of pool size and the landscaping you would like to complete the space. Your backyard may already be landscaped and you want to fit a pool into what already exists, so make sure you have the correct measurements to avoid any miscalculations.
Today there is plenty of technology available to help you determine which size pools will fit into your space so you can easily narrow down your options.
How would you like to use your pool?
Once you have identified your available space, how you plan to use your pool can determine the size and style you opt for. If you have a small space and simply want to relax and keep cool during the hot weather, a plunge or courtyard style is perfect. If your space is narrow and you are looking to exercise at home, then a long lap design is ideal.
Also think about how deep you would like your pool to be and any features you would like included that may affect the overall size and shape, such as the position of the entry steps, spillway spas, aqua beds or water features.
What’s your dream theme?
Many pool buyers have a theme in mind when creating their dream backyard, often inspired by family holidays in favourite destinations such as Bali. Luckily, with so many pool designs and colours available today, it’s easy to make your dream a reality.
Traditional kidney shape designs or those with a curved side or end are perfect for Balinese or tropical inspired themes, allowing you to create an outdoor oasis when coupled with lush landscaping, a water feature and a light pool colour.
Modern home architecture is best complemented with a pool design featuring clean, geometric lines. Choose travertine style headers and pavers and glass fencing to complete the look.
If you have the space, a luxurious resort-style area can be created with a large geometric style pool featuring a long seating ledge for the ultimate relaxation zone.
